What is Essure? The Permanent Birth Control for Women
Currently, Essure is the only permanent birth control available with a non-surgical procedure. This less than 10 minute procedure can be performed right in your doctor's office and is proven to be over 99% effective at preventing unplanned pregnancies. Did we mention it's non-surgical and non-hormonal? There is also little to no recovery time necessary.
When you know for certain that your family is complete and you're ready to consider permanent birth control options, it is highly recommended to speak to your physician about Essure. Essure offers women whose families are complete a proven and easy birth control choice that doesn't require incisions, hormones or slowing down to recover. Women who choose Essure never have to worry about birth control again—no daily pill, no side effects, no quick trips to the pharmacy.
During insertion of the Essure system, your doctor uses a flexible tube with a small camera inserted through the vagina, into the cervix and up to the uterus. Once the openings to the fallopian tubes are visualized, small metal and fiber coils are passed through the hysteroscope and into your fallopian tubes. The Essure system causes scar tissue to form around the coils, blocking your fallopian tubes and preventing sperm from reaching the eggs, preventing pregnancy.
The Essure system takes three months to become effective in preventing pregnancy, and in some women, it may take up to six months. During this time, you must use other contraceptive methods to prevent pregnancy. Essure doesn't offer protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
